Custom retail software for a perfume business with 25+ branches

A Sri Lankan perfume retailer needed more than a standard checkout. Its daily operations depended on complex business rules and automation across a network of over 25 branches.

The challenge

For this retailer, taking payment was only one part of the job. The business had its own way of running day-to-day operations. Conventional point-of-sale (POS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems did not cover the full set of rules it needed. A standard setup would still leave important work outside the system.

What we built

  • Built a customised retail solution around the business's operating requirements.
  • Handled complex business logic that the conventional POS and ERP options did not cover.
  • Developed automation for the day-to-day work of a retailer operating more than 25 branches.

What changed

The retailer received software shaped around the way its business operates. The scope went beyond checkout to address the specialised rules and automation needed across its branch network.

What this experience taught us

The right retail system starts with the work behind each sale. When a business has specialised rules, those rules need to be part of the software design from the beginning.

Questions for your own project

  • Which tasks still happen outside your current POS?
  • Which business rules do staff have to remember or apply manually?
  • What becomes harder each time you add another branch?
